Bedroom Scene — 16" x 20" · oil on linen panel

Painter & poet · Oils · Watercolours · Pastels & Drawings

Figurative painting from a remote cottage in North Cornwall.

Interiors and derelict farm buildings, cattle and sheep, macarons and much-loved toys — each rendered with a stubborn attention to what is actually there, and to what lies underneath it.

The work

“A ‘simple’ lamb or apple is abuzz with symbolism.”

Poetry

Also a poet.

Toby has written several hundred poems, has twice taken first prize in East End Arts Council poetry competitions, and read new work at the Parrish Art Museum in 2017. The animals that fill his paintings turn up in the poems too: a war horse turned out to grass, a rabbit in a garden.
